As a mother, the foods you eat not only sustain you, but your baby as well if you are breastfeeding. Extensive scientific evidence supports the use of a whole-food, predominantly plant-based diet as an important strategy in the prevention of chronic disease, treatment of chronic conditions, and in intensive therapeutic doses, reversal of chronic illness. Foods you would consider feeding your little one are perfect for you as well – a diet rich in fiber, antioxidants, and nutrient dense. Choose a variety of minimally processed vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds.

After baby, exercising may feel like too much to manage. Gentle physical activity is a crucial part of healing and recovery. Gradually incorporate low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, or yoga to strengthen your body and improve mood. It is important that women engage in both general physical activity as well as purposeful exercise weekly as part of overall health and resiliency. Plus, you’ll be able manage the bucket seat and diaper bag as baby grows like a pro.

Stress can lead to improved health and productivity or it can lead to anxiety, depression, obesity, immune dysfunction and more. Helping new mothers recognize negative stress responses, identify coping mechanisms and reduction techniques leads to improved wellbeing. A calmer mom helps foster a calmer environment for baby.

The use of tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption have been shown to increase the risk of chronic diseases and death for you. These substances are exposed to your child through breastmilk and second-hand smoke. Treatments often take time, different approaches and many attempts. Patience and support are an important part of breaking risky substance habits.

If there is one thing new mothers need most, it is restorative sleep. Sleep delays/interruptions have been shown to cause sluggishness, low attention span, decreased sociability, depressed mood, decreased deep sleep, decreased caloric burn during the day, increased hunger and decreased feeling of fullness, insulin resistance and decreased performance. Strive for seven (7) or more hours per night for optimal health. During our session, we can discuss strategies to provide for more sleep.

Positive social connections and relationships affect our physical, mental and emotional health. Having a new baby can be isolating at times. Leveraging the power of relationships and social networks can help reinforce healthy behaviors. Consider joining new moms clubs, or postpartum support groups.
